AP Biology

Essential Concepts and Information

What makes this course interesting?

Learn to think like a scientist, and become an independent investigator through student-directed laboratory investigations:

  1. Pose the questions and determine the variables you want to investigate
  2. Design your own experiments and procedures
  3. Determine how best to present your conclusions

Learn about the core scientific principles, theories, and processes governing living organisms, biological systems, and natural phenomena.

Understand key science practices you can use to develop explanations and predictions of natural phenomena, which you will test and refine through laboratory investigations. Develop advanced reasoning and inquiry skills as you design experiments, collect and analyze data using mathematics and other methods, and interpret that data to draw conclusions.

The AP Biology course is designed to enable you to develop advanced inquiry and reasoning skills, such as designing a plan for collecting data, analyzing data, applying mathematical routines, and connecting concepts in and across domains. The result will be readiness for the study of advanced topics in subsequent college courses — a goal of every AP course.

This AP Biology course is equivalent to a two-semester college introductory biology course and has been endorsed enthusiastically by higher education officials.
